THE ROLE : The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer position will be responsible for all the technical aspects related to the project design engineering. In this role, the incumbent will also be responsible for the creation of new product designs from commercial specifications, documentation of product design, and communication of design information to support personnel, so that the products can be implemented into production. Ability to improve existing product designs and to develop extensions of existing products (Simple/Complex New Business Opportunities) is also required. Knowledge of centrifugal and/or positive displacement pump design, valve/hydraulics design, plastic and metal component design, and fluid dynamics is required. Duties include the creation of cad models, design calculations, mathematical models, tolerancing and stack-up analysis, drawing creation, qualification testing of the design, material specifications, component specifications, agency approvals, BOM’s, concurrent engineering guidance on the sequence of assembly, release of product and component documentation, write lab test procedures, conduct research and development, perform returns analysis of new products, and determine spare parts and kits. This position will be participating in a global, multi-functional team based environment, developing cutting edge product designs for the various industries served by the Specialty Flow Control team. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, the creativity to overcome design issues, the ability to create value for the customer, and the desire to drive the product design efforts of the organization are required. The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer is also required to provide technical oversight and assistance to other departments as required.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Provide technical project leadership on the assigned projects, following Xylem’s XPD stage- gate and NBO/NPR processes.

  • Responsible for designing, validating, and bringing new products and product extensions to market.

  • Responsible for specifying precise new product functional requirements; the designs, tests, and integration of components to produce final designs; and evaluation of the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.

  • Responsible for the designs, development, execution and evaluation of fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans; creation and reviews of material part specifications and bills of materials.

  • Technically direct the work of Drafters, Designers, and Engineering Lab Technicians engaged in the assigned projects.

  • Responsible for collaboration with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability.

  • Responsible for utilizing CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and production of detailed engineering drawings.

  • Responsible for ensuring all new products and extensions are safe and meet customer requirements including respective Agency requirements.

  • Ensure manufacturability of all new products. Interacts with designers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new technologies.

  • Helps development teams prepare deliverables for Gate Review meetings.

  • Create, maintain, and organize documentation required for new product manufacturing, including bills of materials and engineering drawings. Preparation of ECR/ECN package for the release of new product and product extensions.

  • Support with tooling modifications and implement new tooling as necessary for the creation of product extensions and new products.

  • Ensure that all projects are completed on schedule following established procedures and schedules.

  • Provide technical oversight and assistance to other departments as required.

  • Additional duties and responsibilities may be required based on organization needs.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related technical area of science and research with a minimum of 5 years work experience in mechanical design field.

  • or a MS degree with minimum 1 to 2 years work experience in mechanical design field.

  • Proven demonstrated leadership experience is a plus.

Salary range:

$81,000.00 - $146,000.00
