THE ROLE: The Early-Stage Technology Strategist will support developing and executing early-stage innovation strategy for enterprise-level emerging themes in the water sector. They will prepare Xylem for major industry shifts driven by advances in science, technology, and new regulation by leading the Xylem Innovation Labs (XIL) Technology Incubator Program, which seeks to identify and bring to market key early-stage technologies developed by external innovators. Reporting to the VP of Early-Stage Innovation, this role will collaborate extensively with corporate teams and business units to identify priority areas; assess the current and future state of the market landscape; provide clear guidance on the impact to Xylem, our customers, and the industry; make recommendations for early-stage technology investment; and accelerate key technologies to market through partnerships with universities, startups, consultants, customers, and others This role will also be the central manager for the company’s university relationships.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: This person in this role will play a vital part in preparing Xylem to further its leadership position as new customer challenges evolve, the regulatory landscape shifts, and new solutions are developed. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background and strategic and business acumen, able to quickly understand complex technological concepts from diverse disciplines and put them into a business and customer context. They must be highly motivated to seek out information on challenging topics, adept at building stakeholder engagement, comfortable making recommendations with incomplete information, and able to move at a fast pace. They will consider the diverse drivers that must converge for the successful commercialization of a new technology and be sharply focused on addressing customer needs.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • I dentify major industry topics in collaboration with corporate strategy and business unit leadersforinvestment considerationprioritizedaccordingto business and market impact

  • Identify and quantify drivers of change in established and adjacent target markets including new regulations, technological disruption, value enablers

  • Define technological solution sets to meet customer needs in currentandfuture markets and in support of market strategy developmentand effectively communicate to key stakeholders on technology, trends, gaps, unmet customer needs, and program plans/status

  • Build teams and work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, strategic account managers, business development teams, strategy teams, segment/regional business leads, and government affairs

  • Determine the range of viability for emerging technologies , considering performance, cost, scalability, manufacturability, and profitability under different regulatory scenarios and in different markets

  • Define and execute projects to advance emerging technologies to market through research, validation, and laboratoryandpilot testing

  • Collaborate with external partners including customers, universities, entrepreneurs, startups, agencies, and other water ecosystem partners to execute sponsored research, license technology, validate solutions, complete pilots, and build relationships that lead to commercial partnerships

  • Develop and manage relationships with network of universities globally , acting as Xylem’s main point of contact and leader on when/how to engage with university partners for maximum impact

  • Drive the incorporation of new innovations into Xylem’s solutions portfolio through a strong understanding of customer needs, emerging technology,andregulatory developments

  • Engage with stakeholders to define Xylem’s position and deliver written reports that outline the technology landscape, drivers of market change, opportunities, risks, uncertainties, and technology recommendations

  • Engage in thought leadership activities internally and externally including technical client/conference presentations, publishing white papers, participating on panels, and posting on social media

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineeringor science

  • 10-15years of relevant experience

  • Experience working in the water and wastewater industry

  • Experience working with university researchers and technology transfer offices

  • Experience with IP / patent filing and/or review

  • Strong business acumen and experience developing and executing strategy

  • Effectivecommunicationacross multiple levels of business and technical fluency ranging from university professors, customers, colleagues, management, to senior leadership.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills

PREFERRED:

  • MBAorMaster’sdegree

  • Experience working with utilities in municipal drinking water or wastewater

  • Experience working with startups

Salary range:

$121,000.00 - $217,500.00
